A prenup acts as an “insurance policy”, reducing uncertainty and potential conflict if you break up. Nobody wants to spend their wedding planning thinking about divorce, but prenups give clarity and communication. Here are my five top tips.

Discuss your intentions openly and honestly
Have an honest discussion with your partner to discuss intentions and expectations. You may wish to consider which assets to put in to protect as yours. Agree which assets to share, and provisions made in the event of a relationship breakdown. Think about how future changes in circumstances might affect the agreement. For example, if career paths change, or if you have or adopt children. These factors can influence your prenup because they impact your finances.

Seek independent legal advice in good time
This can take three to six months and depends on the complexity of the agreement. Will you openly disclose everything you have with each other and your solicitor? Or will you seek advice from other professionals such as financial advisors? It is often not a quick process, so seek legal advice as early as possible. This will enable plenty of time to finalise matters before your wedding.

Ensure that the document records your agreement 
Typically, one of you instructs a solicitor to prepare a draft prenup, and the other instruct a solicitor to review it. It is common for the document to go through several revisions. This is to ensure the terms are balanced, and reflect what both have agreed. Try not to be alarmed if it takes longer than you expect. The purpose is to create a fair arrangement that both parties feel comfortable with.

Implement any necessary provisions
Many prenups include provisions that require you to take practical steps once you sign the document. For example, the agreement may stipulate how you should own property. It may direct you to put insurance policies in place to protect income or assets, or require you to prepare or update your Wills. Your solicitor will advise you on the practical steps to consider once you sign your prenup; it is important that you deal with these as soon as possible.

Remember to review the agreement
Do not view a prenup as a document you cannot change. Review the agreement periodically — usually every five years — to ensure it still reflects your financial circumstances and family situation. This keeps the agreement relevant and fair, helping it carry more decisive weight if you dispute matters in court upon separation. Strictly speaking, the current law in England and Wales does not make prenups legally binding. However, if you meet certain criteria — such as ensuring the agreement is fair, and entering it freely without undue influence — the court will give it decisive weight if your relationship breaks down.

Planning a wedding shouldn’t mean planning for a divorce, but your financial security is hugely important. The earlier you think about it, the better.

You have been at the forefront of luxury bridal design and evening-wear for over 35 years. Can you tell us a little about how you started out?
“I had been making clothes all my life, but after spending five years in the USA designing active sportswear under my brand Survival Kit, I was ready for a new direction. When I returned to London in 1991, a good friend suggested I look at bridal-wear, which was a market I hadn’t previously considered. Almost immediately, I noticed a gap there. There were very few designers creating beautifully-cut silk gowns with a strong emphasis on style and craftsmanship. That realisation led me to open my first store and launch Caroline Castigliano.”

What is it that particularly draws you to bridal and evening-wear?
“I have always been fascinated by structure, the female form, and how clothing can make a woman look – and, more importantly, feel. I love how fabric, cut, and construction can transform not just how a woman looks, but how she carries herself. What began as a deep respect for craftsmanship quickly became a lifelong pursuit of creating gowns that empower rather than overwhelm. Thirty five years later, that philosophy continues to guide everything I do. Bridal and eveningwear sit at the most emotional moments in a woman’s life. I’ve always been drawn to designing for occasions that carry meaning, pieces that become part of someone’s memory, not just their wardrobe.”

With your signature corsetry and undergarments, your approach to design is almost architectural. Why are the foundations of a dress so important?
“Because beauty begins beneath the surface. Corsetry is the invisible language of couture. It sculpts, supports, and allows a woman to move with confidence. When the foundation is perfect, everything else flows effortlessly.”

As you’re also famed for your clean lines and for timeless style, do you agree that less always more?“Absolutely. Restraint is powerful. When design is distilled to its purest form, every line matters. Clean silhouettes allow craftsmanship, fit, and fabric to speak, and that’s where true luxury lives.”

Do you have a favourite gown from your collections?
“My favourite gown is always the next one. Each design reflects where I am creatively at that moment: my evolution, my curiosity, my response to modern women. Couture should never stand still.”

You have dressed plenty of famous faces. Is there anyone you would love to dress in the future?
“I’ve been very fortunate to dress extraordinary women from many worlds. What excites me most isn’t fame, but individuality, women with a strong sense of self. Those are always the most compelling muses.”

Are there any emerging bridal trends you are particularly excited about?
“I’m drawn to a return to purity: refined silhouettes, thoughtful construction, and subtle drama. Brides today want authenticity. They’re choosing pieces that feel personal, intelligent, and enduring rather than overtly decorative.”

 Do you have any tips for brides searching for their dream dress?
“The most important things is to always trust how a dress makes you feel, not how it photographs. The right gown should give you quiet confidence, and feel like an extension of you, not a costume.”

Your couture gowns continue to be in high demand, season after season. Can you talk us through the design process?
“Couture begins with conversation. We listen, sketch, drape, and refine. Every gown is built by hand, layer by layer, fitting by fitting. It’s an intimate collaboration where precision meets emotion.”

Your embellishment is always stunning and intricate. What is the longest a dress has ever taken you to make?
“Some gowns take over a thousand hours. True craftsmanship cannot be rushed, especially when every stitch, embellishment, and seam is executed by hand with intention.”

Private schools’ independence mean they can offer a wider choice of subjects and opportunities compared to state schools, which of course, is thrilling. But it can be overwhelming, too. Start with the most important person in this process: your child. The very ethos of the independent sector is to do the best for each pupil, so taking the time to talk to your offspring about what they are hoping to gain from their school experience will prove invaluable. For example, is there a particular subject they hope to excel in? Discuss what they feel are their strengths and weaknesses are, what they like and dislike about the school environment. You may be surprised. 

List the essentials

Once you have gained an idea of what your child is focussing on – and any concerns they have – you will need to draw up a list of your schooling essentials. These are the non-negotiables. The internet is king when looking for potential schools, so make full use of school-ranking websites like the Independent Schools Council and The Independent Schools Inspectorate, which allow you to search by criteria as well as giving you access to inspection reports, information on fees and average class size. Most parents go straight to a school’s results, but researching how many exams pupils will take and how progress is monitored is also vital. Thinking about each school’s reputation will help. Is the school famed for its academic excellence, artistic prowess or sporting successes? If the school’s values are in line with your own hopes and dreams for your son or daughter, they may very well be a contender. 

Pay a visit

All schools offer open days and private visits, and by visiting a school – and talking to teachers and students – you will be able to establish an authentic ‘feel’ of the school. View examples of students’ work, witness interactions between staff and pupils and remember to involve your child in your visits from the start. A strong, inclusive sense of community will be particularly important to boarders who will spend most of their time on campus, so think of this as the school’s final interview. Ask any questions important to you and your child, such as what is the pastoral care provision? What are the leaver destinations? What kind of alumni do they have? No question is too small.

Parents who want their child to express their creative side might look to the name Kate. “Women with the name Kate have written more of the best-rated contemporary British novels than any other, including Kate Atkinson and Kate Morton.” 

When it comes to raising the next generation of the brightest minds, Anna is most likely to get into the University of Oxford, making it the top choice for academic success.

While the study suggests a link between certain names and success, Lars points out that these findings also reflect cultural trends: “Our research is a fascinating look at the names that have become symbols of success in different fields. While a name can’t guarantee a person’s destiny, the ‘successful’ names we see today offer a unique window into the cultural and generational trends that have shaped who rises to the top.”
