Buying and selling property will always be exhilarating — and exhausting — but according to Nathan, successful investments begin with the relationships you build. “Start by identifying and concentrating on one or two specific areas where you’d like to buy. This focus allows you to become familiar with local pricing and availability, and enables you to build strong relationships with estate agents who specialise in those neighbourhoods. A good relationship with local estate agents can also give you a competitive edge: agents are more likely to call serious buyers first when new properties come to market. By maintaining regular contact and demonstrating your commitment, you’ll stay at the front of their minds.”

Prepare for Prime

For many high-net-worth individuals, certain areas reign supreme. “Properties in locations like Knightsbridge, Belgravia, and Mayfair continue to be high demand London investments, closely followed by areas such as Chelsea, Kensington, and Holland Park in West London. The Beckhams reside in an impressive Grade II listed building in Holland Park – which obviously does no harm to property prices – but while the area will always be key to premium real estate, there are still some really good spots in Holland Park where you can find houses to buy, renovate, and then successfully flip. There are also lots of low leases around the area, which make it appealing to developers.”

New Opportunities

London currently offers a wealth of new investment opportunities with premium postcodes. “There are some really exciting developments happening within prime areas, which are growing in popularity, including Chelsea Barracks, and 1 Mayfair, which is a brand-new development set to be completed in Spring 2026. Apartments start at a cool £35 million and overseas investors from China and Saudi Arabia are taking a keen interest in the area.”

Track Hotspots

For those looking for more square feet for their finances, Nathan suggests further afield. “I have seen a sudden boom for luxury homes in one of North London’s quieter areas, De Beauvoir, where the average price is around £855,213 – but it’s the more expensive properties that buyers are searching for, with demand for houses around £2 million. It is a peaceful area with a community feel, so families are making offers at or above the asking price, and out-bidding each other in an attempt to secure their home. When it comes to Notting Hill, Portobello and Westbourne Grove, the pound per square foot is quite high — between £1,300 and £2,000 — but this can go significantly higher for other prime property locations, meaning you can generally get a lot more for your money.”

Buy The Dream

Whether you love modern architecture or crave old-world charm, there’ll no doubt be some non-negotiable boxes that simply must be ticked. “For most buyers, a dream home will be a detached house with a large open plan kitchen, dining, and living area, with a sunny South-facing garden. Paying some thought to sustainability will also pay off — perhaps using solar panels or switching to a heat pump instead of gas combi boilers. And for an extra flourish, everything from tennis courts and swimming pools to boathouses will drive up value. We recently had a house in Woolwich with plenty of add-ons that sold for an impressive £4 million.”

Select Your Dream Team

Engaging with the right people will ensure your property journey runs smoothly. “Choosing the right solicitor is crucial in both buying and selling. Avoid large conveyancing firms that process cases in bulk with limited personal interaction. Instead, opt for a solicitor who offers clear communication, accessibility, and prompt service. If you’re selling, have a professional survey done in advance, and share it with potential buyers to help highlight any issues that might otherwise delay or derail the sale. Transparency builds trust and helps prevent deals from falling through later.”

Don’t Go Low

And finally, here are Nathan’s last words of advice for buying or selling in London. “Never, never be swayed by low fees. It is obviously tempting to go with the estate agent offering the lowest, but this may be a bad investment in the long-run. In the Capital, average fees typically range from 1.5% to 2%, but a slightly higher commission can incentivise agents to work harder on your behalf. Ultimately, a motivated and proactive agent is worth the investment.”

Historically, benchmarks such as the Liv-ex 1000 — which tracks a thousand wines from across the world — have been relatively stable during episodes that unsettled equities, including the global financial crisis and COVID-19. History does not guarantee future results, but it does help explain why many investors use wine for diversification.”

“How, then, does a bottle become more valuable? Three mechanisms do most of the work. First, improvement in a bottle. Fine wines are built to evolve, and as they approach an ideal drinking window, the demand heightens. Second, scarcity. Every cork pulled elsewhere reduces the pool of pristine stock, so well-stored cases start to command a premium. Third is desirability. Growing and evolving reputation, quality, and critic appraisals concentrate interest on the best producers and vintages.”

What to buy and how to build

“Build from regions rather than labels, looking at Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne. For breadth add wine from Italy, USA, and Rhône, and include an allocation from the rest of the world like Spain, Chile, Germany, Australia, and Argentina. Selection also matters; not every wine is investment grade. Professionals weigh producer standing, vintage strength, credible critic scores, production volume, and evidence of active secondary-market trading. They also consider proximity to the prime drinking window and relative value within a peer set, rather than headline hype.”

Think years, not months

“Wine is patient capital, so plan exits around market depth and drinking windows, and remember, liquidity varies. Great names move readily, while niche can take time to sell. Independent benchmarks and valuations help momentum before you act. Practicalities protect value. Climate-controlled, bonded storage is non-negotiable if you want to ensure saleability on the secondary market. Condition and provenance are also critical, so keep audit trails complete. Wine investment operates in an unregulated space which offers flexibility but makes your choice of counterparties important. Work with reputable sources, and insist on transparency around ownership, fees, and storage.”

There’s a UK taxation advantage

“For UK-based readers there is an additional point when it comes to investing in fine wine, as many tend to fall under the ‘wasting asset’ rules for capital gains, which can mean profits are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for private individuals, subject to various criteria such as expected lifespan, as well as HMRC guidance. This should be checked with a professional adviser, but it is a meaningful feature of the market and part of the appeal to domestic investors.”

The next steps on your journey

“Formalise what you do for pleasure. Decide on the role wine should play, whether diversification, long-term growth or a family cellar. Set a budget that gives a selection, with a smaller allocation for discovery. Buy the best you can, store original cases in bond from day one, and track independent references as you review holdings over time. The reward is two-fold. You gain an asset that’s shown the ability to steady a portfolio, while retaining the pleasure of opening a bottle at the right moment. For people who already spend on the best wines, that blend of enjoyment and financial sense is the sweet spot.”

How did your career begin?

“I enrolled at college at 16 to study horology, a three-year course designed to turn me into a watch and clock repairer. During my second year, a man called George Daniels came to visit. I had no idea who he was, but by the end I understood this was an extraordinary man living an extraordinary life. That meeting was life-changing experience, and from that moment on I knew I wanted to make a handmade watch.”

What happened next?

“After college, I wrote to ask if George would take me on as an apprentice. He replied saying he always worked alone, but did offer to meet to discuss my ambitions. The meeting ended with George saying, ‘If you want to make a watch, it is only you who can do it. I cannot teach you. And it is such a huge undertaking that if you have the drive to do it, you will succeed’.”

But he wasn’t impressed with your first attempt.

“I completed it in 18 months, and George commented it looked too handmade — and that a fine handmade watch should look as though it has been created, not simply handmade. It was the wake-up call I needed, and I began work on my second, which took five and a half years to create.”

Why so long?

“I realised I had to focus on each individual skill required to create it completely handmade — all 34. When the second watch was finished, George said ‘congratulations — you’re now a watchmaker,” and it was this moment that led to my invitation to work full-time with him in his workshop.”

Before dedicating yourself to hand-crafting movements, was there an industrially-produced timepiece you coveted?

“I’ve always been impressed by Omega watches from the 1950s and 60s. In my early days as a watch repairer, if I received an Omega I knew it would be an easy day. The mechanisms were so well designed and made to such a high standard that I could strip them, clean them, reassemble them, and be confident the watch would keep time just as well as the day it left the factory.”

How do you articulate the intangible value — the ‘soul’ — that a wholly hand-created watch possesses?

“Watches are incredibly personal pieces. When someone engages with me we begin a journey, defining the specification and dedicating the entire workshop to the creation of that watch. Every one of the 20 pieces that leaves each year carries a part of my soul. What my clients are buying is that experience, that knowledge, and that devotion to creating a handmade watch.”

Moving on to the Series 6. How does it demonstrate how your work has evolved?

“The Series 6 concept began while I was working on the Series 4, which features a date dial at its periphery — with the traditional method of displaying it a hand radiating from the centre. The problem was the hand would sit over key information on the dial for several days. This was unacceptable to me, as I’ve always strived to create a legible, open dial. That challenge led to the idea of the travelling date aperture — and as the industry has now adopted the concept, I thought it fitting to celebrate its acceptance by creating a very simple watch with a real focus on the aperture itself.”

What has been your most challenging Series to date?

“The Series 4, largely because of the travelling date aperture and the triple-calendar complication, which is, incidentally, instantaneous. Creating a mechanism like this demands a tremendous amount of effort, particularly when everything must occur in a split second. It becomes a delicate balancing act — refining the design of each component while perfecting the spring tensions throughout the entire mechanism.”

Is it true you’ve closed your books?

“My list is open to owners of an RW Smith or a Daniel’s, but at times we do allow new customers to join our waiting list: but there’s a careful process involved. Our team consists of 15, and we produce just 20 pieces per year. We could increase production, but doing so would come at the cost of quality — and as a watchmaker, I couldn’t allow that.”

How many watches have you created?

Over 24 years, we have produced around 185 pieces. I recall a conversation with an existing client who visited looking to add another piece to his collection. He showed me his Series 2, which he’d received a few years earlier, and was astonished to learn it was one of only 12 pieces made since the introduction of my Mark 2 two-movement in 2019. These are incredibly rare!”

What role do you believe your workshop plays to secure the future of British horology?

“It is very difficult for us to make a real impact because our production is incredibly low. What we can do is demonstrate what is possible. My work with the Alliance of British Watch and Clock Makers has been an eye-opening experience, and I am encouraged to see a rebirth of British watchmaking. We are still a long way from factories across Britain producing watch components, but you must start somewhere. If my work can, in any way, help support that growth, then I believe that can only be a good thing.”

What would you say to an aspiring watchmaker looking to seek a career in horology?

It’s a fascinating world and there are many different paths to take. While bench work is at the heart of the industry, there are numerous supporting roles that contribute to the growth of watchmaking in other ways. From technical development and quality control, to sales, marketing, and education, the industry offers a diverse range of ways to engage and thrive.”

So is there anything you can reveal about the Series 7?

“While there will be another watch in the future, for now I need to stay tight-lipped. We’re also extremely excited about 2026 as it marks the 25th anniversary of RWS; the centenary of George Daniels’ birth. This dual milestone demands a tribute that will not only honour the legacy but celebrates the evolution of British mechanical watchmaking. Watch this space.”

You come from retail royalty. What would you say is your earliest memory of the shop floor?

“I suppose it would be when I got a Saturday job at Browns under the ownership of Sir William Pigot-Brown. My family bought the business two years later, and while this was a lifetime ago, I still remember those early days and always try to lead by example. I don’t need to take boxes to the stockroom, but I do because it helps everyone.”

Your mother, Joan, was instrumental in bringing names like Calvin Klein to London. What are the style rules she taught you?

“I worked with my mother as an assistant from the age of 18 and learnt so much. ‘When in doubt, cut it out’ was her motto, and this always made editing collections easier.”

Selling Browns must have been emotional. What would you say prompted the move?

“I returned to London in 2008 having spent 20 years living and working in Paris for Sonia Rykiel — and after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the retail business was tough. The pub next door was demolished and replaced by Bosideng, and tunnelling for the Elizabeth Line was going on underneath our store. It was a crazy time with so much happening.”

How did you survive?

“It was thanks to a strong retail and online presence. However, what was becoming apparent was that we were trailing behind our competitors like Matches and Net-a-Porter in terms of online business. So, when José Neves of Farfetch approached us, it seemed to be the right move for everyone for him to acquire Browns, as clearly we lacked the experience and funding to match our competitors.”

Your business, The Place London, now resides on Brown’s original spot on South Molton Street. What’s your vision for the brand?

“When I opened The Place London in 2015 in Connaught Village, I wanted to continue to find talent and give designers a showcase to express themselves. I made a conscious choice not to go after any big brand but to offer ‘affordable luxury’ with a combination of craftmanship and technology, often with a timeless style to customers.”

How are you finding it?

“Customers are often pleasantly surprised to discover brands that they have never heard of. Mii and Cord are just a couple of examples of great designers offering original collections and great quality at affordable prices.”

You also have a branch in Paris. When there are there any places you always like to visit?

“Paris is my second home, and I fell in love with the shop located in the heart of St Germain, which is on a beautiful street called Rue de L’Odeon, which leads up to the Jardin du Luxembourg. My three daughters live in St Germain, so I usually hang out in the neighbourhood. There are so many good restaurants to choose from, along with galleries and small museums, which I love.”

You continue to champion independent and emerging designers as your mother did. How do you select designers for The Place?

“I do an awful lot of research, mostly at trade fairs where I can spot designers that have a strong identity that matches the ethos of The Place London.”

You also acquired Leathersmith of London in 2015, which recently received the Royal Warrant. Tell us about the brand.

“Leathersmith of London encompasses everything I champion. Heritage, craftmanship, technology, quality and good value. Instead of retiring after selling Browns, I did quite the opposite. I was a minority shareholder in Nealedataday Ltd., a family-run business producing Leathersmith and other brands in Canvey Island. Unfortunately, the company ran into financial difficulties, and it coincided at the time with the sale of Browns, so I was able to save it. Today we have a beautiful modern bindery that the Duchess of Edinburgh opened two years ago. The Royal Warrant was granted to Charfleet bookbindery for the calendars we supply to Buckingham Palace.”

You work hard — which must afford a few luxuries. What is your biggest indulgence today?

“My real luxury is to be able to do what I am doing, travelling a lot to interesting places. I realise that I will never make more money with my current businesses than I did with the sale of Browns, so it is a labour of love. I am indebted to my parents and sister for all the hard work they did over the past 40 years.”

When you do get a moment to unwind, what is your favourite way to spend the day?

“I love to go to the markets: Portobello and Goldborne road in London, or Vanves in Paris on a Saturday morning. I like to do some food shopping, buy the weekend newspapers and have a late breakfast nearby. I am also a keen tennis player and a member of the Campden Hill Lawn Tennis Club, so I often play there on a Saturday afternoon. But if I’m being honest, relaxing at home with my partner after a busy week and putting my feet up is my absolute favourite way to unwind.”
