Keeping young drivers safe on the roads is a subject often in the news. But should driver education start long before 17? Young Driver, which teaches youngsters from four-years-old, certainly thinks so.

Shockingly, in the UK 20% of new drivers crash within six months of passing their test. But research conducted with Young Driver past pupils reveals that drops dramatically, to fewer than 4%. Young Driver alumni are also more likely to pass their test: the scheme’s research shows that 78% pass first time compared to the national average of 48%. Young Driver pupils can also enjoy discounts on insurance because they are statistically safer drivers.

With the driver training scheme, youngsters aged nine to 17 learn the basics of safe, responsible driving in dual-controlled Suzuki Swifts or similar cars, under the supervision of fully qualified instructors. A road system is created, with traffic signs, roundabouts and junctions, along with special areas to practice manoeuvres such as steering control and parking.
